Specialist School Status

The DfES is encouraging more and more secondary schools to apply for specialist school status and to develop their own distinctive character and ethos. Extra funding is available to those schools who achieve specialist status and at present there are eight categories available:

• technology
• languages
• sports
• arts (visual, performing and media)
• business and enterprise
• engineering
• science
• mathematics and computing

A number of Walsall schools have successfully applied and these are:

• Joseph Leckie School
  Technology
• Queen Mary's High School
  Languages
• Willenhall School
  Sports
• Queen Mary's Grammar School
  Languages
• Brownhills School
  Technology (from September 2002)
• Shelfield School
  Sports (from September 2002)
