MY ANSWERS

1 What sort of building would the Art Gallery be classified as?

2 Calculate the area of ground covered by the building.    m2

3 If you walked around the sides of the building, how far would
you travel?

   m

Because of its height the Art Gallery needs strong FOUNDATIONS which go down below ground level. The foundations go down 3 metres. So the first stage in building was to EXCAVATE a hole 35m long, 30m wide and 3m deep. Once the earth has been excavated and taken away the concrete can be poured in.

4 Calculate the volume of earth that was removed for the Art
Gallery's foundations.

   m3

5 In one day 150m3 can be excavated. If there were no delays
how long did it take to excavate the foundations?

   days

6 One lorry can take away 10m3 in each load. How many lorry
loads would be taken away each day?

7 Each lorry can make 5 trips per day. How many lorries
would be needed to keep up with the excavation?

8 One lorry load weighs 20 tonnes. What is the weight of 1
cubic metre of soil?

   tonnes

One cubic metre of concrete costs £50 and weighs 2400kg. Each mixer lorry can carry 5 cubic metres of concrete. The concrete is poured at the rate of 20 cubic metres per day.

9 What is the cost of one load of concrete?

  £

10 How much does one load of concrete weigh?

   tonnes

11 How many loads were delivered each day?
